Q: I am very interested in the sales profession and really want to make it as my lifetime career. Compared this to the numerous administrative positions I have held over the last eight years, selling really touches my heart the most.

However, I cannot firmly decide whether I should go into it. On one hand, I feel inadequate as I do not have any formal sales training at all, but on the other hand, I somehow know that I have the potential to be good, seen from the many successes I have achieved in selling some products, and even ideas to my friends. How can I know if I am cut out for this profession?  If this is the direction, how can I make it a great success?

A: If your higher purpose is more than just about making lots of money, then you might have found the sales career as the one to go for in the longer term.  This is because you will find it very fulfilling as the key purpose of selling is really about making a difference in people’s lives or making people’s life better as you share something good with them. You will then do very well in it.

The key success factor for anyone who wants to be a great sales person is to set their mind to wholeheartedly serve their customers and not to reduce them to only ‘money in the bank’. With this attitude, you will be service-oriented to make your customers happy and satisfied.

When this is clear, you then learn the art of powerful sales conversations that uses the tool of asking powerful questions and listening at a deep level. Such conversations not only impress your customers but also enable you to connect with them to gain trust and credibility.
